The study was inspired by the fact that many students still struggle to understand spoken English when it is taught using traditional methods, especially audio-only materials. The researcher believes that using video media which provides both visual and auditory input can help students improve their listening skills more effectively and with greater interest. This study used a quantitative method involving two groups: the experimental group, which was taught using video media, and the control group, which received listening instruction through audio-only materials. The students who learned through video media were more engaged, more motivated, and better able to understand the content. Based on these findings, the researcher concludes that video media is an effective tool for teaching listening skills to young EFL learners. It is suggested that teachers use video materials more often in English lessons to make learning more enjoyable and successful.
2026-06-16T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://jurnal.unpal.ac.id/index.php/pbi/article/view/1903 The Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Learning Process for College Students: Benefits and Strengths 2026-06-18T09:41:14+07:00 Hartini Agustiawati hartiniagustiawati@yahoo.co.id Wiwin Syafitri wiwinsyafitri03@gmail.com Maharani . hartiniagustiawati@yahoo.co.id

ABSTRACT

This research was conducted at one of the universities, namely Palembang University. This study employs a qualitative netnographic approach, with data consisting of fifteen selected videos uploaded by Indonesian users participating in the trend. Using Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, the analysis emphasizes three analytical categories: expression of emotion, feminine-coded masculinity, and the role of vulnerability. The findings show that masculinity in the “Performative Male” trend is conceptualized as a performative and flexible identity, characterized by calm emotional expression, an aesthetic lifestyle, and openness to vulnerability. Furthermore, audience responses reveal that this form of masculinity in the “Performative Male” trend is not fully accepted within society, as indicated by the dominance of critical responses.
2026-06-16T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://jurnal.unpal.ac.id/index.php/pbi/article/view/1895 CODE-SWITCHING AND CODE-MIXING ANALYSIS IN TIKTOK VIDEOS OF @LUTFI_AFANSYAH AS ACTS OF IDENTITY 2026-06-16T09:53:46+07:00 Fahma Ilma Dian fahma.syams@gmail.com Febri Yansyah yansyahfebri013@gmail.com Athya Inaya Tulla athyainayaa@gmail.com Muhammad Alfa Zain muhammadalfazain1@gmail.com Shofil Fikri h_anada@uin-malang.ac.id
The development of short video-based social media has changed the way speakers practice language, especially in multilingual societies such as Indonesia, which has a variety of regional languages and other foreign languages, leading to language mixing and even code-switching. Of course, this does not happen randomly, but is done to express the speaker's identity. This study will examine the general patterns, social functions of code-switching and code-mixing, and code-switching and code-mixing as acts of identity in the TikTok video @Lutfi_afansyah. A qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis model is in line with this research by listening to and recording code-switching and code-mixing in the video, then analyzing it through data reduction and presentation, and finally drawing conclusions. It was found that the general pattern of code-switching and code-mixing in the analyzed videos was in Indonesian with the insertion of English elements and also several regional languages. The social function of these code-switching and code-mixing patterns is to build a professional persona, a woke persona concerned with mental health, and a global lifestyle. Among the various parameters for measuring critical thinking, pragmatic analysis is particularly well-suited for language learners. This study investigates students’ ability to analyze short conversations containing Gricean maxim flouting to reveal their levels of critical thinking. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study analyzed written responses from undergraduate students using a rubric adapted from Facione’s (2011) critical thinking framework, focusing on four indicators: analysis, interpretation, inference, and evaluation. The findings indicate that while most students were able to correctly identify the flouted maxims, many experienced significant difficulties in inferring conversational implicature and providing deep contextual justification. High-level critical thinking was characterized by the integration of maxim identification with nuanced contextual reasoning, whereas lower-level thinking was limited to mere descriptive responses. These results suggest that pragmatic analysis of maxim flouting serves as an effective lens for examining critical thinking in EFL contexts. Furthermore, the study highlights the necessity for explicit instructional support to develop students' inferential and evaluative reasoning skills within pragmatics education.
2026-06-30T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://jurnal.unpal.ac.id/index.php/pbi/article/view/1916 MOOD SYSTEM ANALYSIS OF EFL STUDENTS’ NARRATIVE WRITING IN THE PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IMPLEMENTATION 2026-06-17T12:14:23+07:00 Aina Farah Nur Humaira 2210631060054@student.unsika.ac.id Yogi Setia Samsi yogi.setiasamsi@staff.unsika.ac.id Fela Dafitri fela.dafitri@fkip.unsika.ac.id
This study analyzes the use of the Mood System in EFL students’ narrative writing after the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL). The research employed a descriptive qualitative method using the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), particularly the interpersonal metafunction proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (1994). Twenty eleventh-grade students from a private senior high school in Bogor were purposively involved in this study. The data consisted of four collaboratively written narrative texts produced during PjBL activities. The analysis focused on declarative, interrogative, and imperative clauses to examine the realization of interpersonal meaning in students’ narratives. The findings revealed that declarative clauses were the most dominant mood type in all texts, indicating that students mainly focused on delivering information and organizing story events systematically. Meanwhile, interrogative and imperative clauses appeared less frequently and were mostly used to support interaction among characters. In addition, Groups 1 and 4 demonstrated more varied mood choices, resulting in more interactive narratives, while Groups 2 and 3 relied more heavily on declarative clauses, making the texts more descriptive. Furthermore, PjBL encouraged students to develop narrative texts collaboratively and creatively, although mood variation remained limited. Therefore, explicit instruction on the Mood System and interpersonal meaning is needed to help students produce more meaningful and interactive narrative texts.
2026-06-16T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://jurnal.unpal.ac.id/index.php/pbi/article/view/1875 IMPLEMENTING AN ENGLISH ZONE TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AT SMP IT FATHONA PALEMBANG 2026-06-17T12:52:48+07:00 Ahmad Khoirul Akhir Tanjung ahmad.khoirul.akhir@polsri.ac.id
Abstract

English proficiency, including listening, reading, speaking, and writing, is essential for addressing the challenges of the 21st century. However, preliminary observations at SMP IT Fathona Palembang revealed that many students lack confidence and have limited ability to use English actively, both orally and in writing, due to the absence of a supportive language environment beyond the classroom. This study aims to (1) describe the implementation process of an English Zone program, (2) measure students’ improvement in English proficiency, and (3) evaluate students’ perceptions of the program. This research employed School Action Research using a mixed-methods approach. The participants were eleventh-grade students of SMP IT Fathona Palembang. Data were collected through observations, interviews, pre- and post-tests, and student perception questionnaires. The findings indicate that the implementation of the English Zone contributed positively to students’ English proficiency and increased their confidence in using English. In conclusion, the English Zone serves as an effective strategy to create a supportive language environment and promote active English use among junior high school students.

Abstrak

Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang mencakup listening, reading, speaking, dan writing merupakan kompetensi penting dalam menghadapi tantangan abad ke-21. The study aims to explore teachers’ views regarding the use of bilingual storybooks in supporting English language learning, increasing students’ engagement, and promoting local cultural awareness. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research design involving 26 teachers who have knowledge of or experience with teaching English to young learners. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that teachers generally perceived bilingual storybooks positively as supportive instructional media for young learners. The participants believed that bilingual storybooks helped students understand English vocabulary and expressions more easily through contextualized stories and visual illustrations. In addition, storytelling activities were perceived to increase students’ motivation, participation, and classroom engagement. The findings also showed that integrating local cultural elements into bilingual storybooks helped students develop cultural awareness and appreciation of local traditions. However, several teachers identified challenges related to classroom implementation, including students’ dependence on first-language translations, differences in language proficiency, and limited classroom time. The study concludes that bilingual storybooks have strong potential to support meaningful and culturally responsive English language learning for young learners when supported by appropriate instructional strategies and classroom activities.
2026-06-24T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://jurnal.unpal.ac.id/index.php/pbi/article/view/1969 Translanguaging In Social Media Content: A Case Study Of Maxwell Salvadorr’s Youtube Content 2026-06-24T13:37:55+07:00 Lulu' Uswatun Chasanah luluuswatun0209@gmail.com icuk prayogi icukprayogi@upgris.ac.id Rawinda Fitrotul Mualafina rawindafitrotul@upgris.ac.id
This study aims to describe translanguaging practices in Maxwell Salvadorr’s YouTube content. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a corpus-based approach. The research data consisted of spoken utterances from the YouTube channel @maxwellsalvadorr, which were transcribed into textual form. Data collection was conducted through observation and note-taking techniques, while data analysis was assisted by AntConc software to identify the frequency and distribution of vocabulary items. The findings indicate that Maxwell Salvadorr’s utterances demonstrate translanguaging practices through the flexible use of Indonesian, the Surabaya dialect of Javanese, and nonstandard language elements within a single utterance. These practices are reflected in the use of distinctive vocabulary items such as iki, lek, kon, arek, and ngene, which are used alongside Indonesian in digital communication contexts. In addition, pragmatic particles such as loh, toh, and sih were found, indicating informal communication strategies and social closeness with the audience. From a phonetic perspective, translanguaging practices are also marked by the use of the vowel /ɔ/, the velar nasal consonant /ŋ/, and the glottal stop /ʔ/, which are characteristic features of the Surabaya dialect. The findings show that language use in digital media is dynamic and flexible and reflects the speaker’s bilingual identity in establishing communication with the audience.
2026-06-23T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://jurnal.unpal.ac.id/index.php/pbi/article/view/1912 AUTHORITY AND DISCIPLINE IN POST-WORLD WAR II FRENCH EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN THE FILM LES CHORISTES 2026-06-18T16:21:12+07:00 Triana Fatmawati Fatmawati trianafatmawati77@gmail.com Aisyiah Al Adawiyah aisyiahaladawiyah@mail.unnes.ac.id

In the study of French language and culture, French-language films serve as important objects of study because they represent the social values, history, and ideology that have developed within French society. This study examines the types of conjunctions used in students' analytical exposition texts and analyzes how they function as textual themes within the Theme-Rheme framework. Using a qualitative descriptive design grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), we analyzed a corpus of five collaborative essays comprising 83 clauses, written by fourth-semester academic writing students. The analysis identified 57 conjunctions, with additive relations being the most frequent category. Specifically, 20 of these markers operated as textual themes, directing the information flow and maintaining discourse continuity. These results demonstrate that conjunctions are not merely mechanical grammatical tools, but essential semantic resources for organizing a text globally. Consequently, writing instruction needs to shift toward functional linguistic principles to help students manage themes more effectively.
2026-06-16T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://jurnal.unpal.ac.id/index.php/pbi/article/view/1965 An Analysis of the Use of Cohesive Devices in Palestinian Undergraduate Students' Essay Writing 2026-06-20T06:57:42+07:00 Nadhira Atallah nadhiraatallah02@gmail.com Hanafi Wibowo hanafiwibowo.fkip@uia.ac.id Ellis Tamela ellis.fkip@uia.ac.id
This study investigated the use of cohesive devices in personal profile essays written by Palestinian undergraduate EFL students. The study aimed to identify the types of cohesive devices used, examine their frequency, and analyze the challenges encountered in their use. A qualitative descriptive design with content analysis was employed based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) cohesion framework. The participants consisted of three Palestinian undergraduate EFL students at As-Syafi’iyah Islamic University, and three personal profile essays were analyzed. A total of 100 cohesive devices were identified in the essays. Reference devices were the most frequently used, accounting for 51.0% of the total cohesive devices, followed by conjunctions (25.5%) and lexical cohesion (23.5%). The findings indicate that the students relied heavily on personal references, additive conjunctions, and lexical repetition. At the same time, limited variation and the overuse of certain cohesive devices affected the coherence of their writing. Although the students demonstrated a basic understanding of cohesive devices, several problems were identified, including excessive repetition and inappropriate use of conjunctions. These findings suggest that explicit instruction in cohesive devices is essential for improving students’ writing coherence and overall discourse competence in academic writing.

Employing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as the primary theoretical framework, supplemented by Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and Entman’s concept of framing as a linguistic packaging device, this study examines the lexical choices, metaphorical constructions, semantic prosody, and ideological positioning embedded in the news texts. The analysis reveals that each media outlet constructs the term ‘chest feeding’ differently through deliberate linguistic strategies: NYPost.com employs cautious, institutionally-distanced language that reflects political alignment; DailyMail.co.uk deploys emotive, morally-charged lexis and hyperbole to construct a discourse of danger and institutional betrayal; while Pikiran-Rakyat.com utilizes a politico-religious discourse framework that recontextualizes the term within Indonesian socio-cultural and ideological norms. The study demonstrates that the contested term ‘chest feeding’ functions not merely as a neologism, but as a site of ideological struggle where language actively constructs social identity, moral order, and political power.
2026-06-25T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## https://jurnal.unpal.ac.id/index.php/pbi/article/view/1972 STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS AND EXPERIENCES OF VOCABULARY MEMORY THROUGH SHORT ANIMATED VIDEOS AS AN ENGLISH LEARNING MEDIA 2026-06-25T14:00:05+07:00 Na'imatul Husni naimatul.husni@gmail.com Melisa Novianty melisanovianty25@gmail.com Adrian Alrapi adrian64@gmail.com
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions and live experiences of fifth-grade students regarding their vocabulary memory retention when short animated videos (3–5 minutes) were integrated as learning media. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a case study design. The research data were gathered at SD N 17 Palembang through semi-structured interviews, non-participant classroom observations, and simple stimulated recall tasks. The participants were selected through purposive sampling, focusing on six expressive fifth-graders. The results of the thematic analysis showed that the students possessed highly positive perceptions and vivid cognitive experiences. The implementation of short animated videos successfully transformed vocabulary learning from a text-heavy chore into an active visual stimulation, facilitated dual-sensory anchoring via the dual-coding of visual movements (imagens) and auditory cues (logogens), contextualized vocabulary through narrative placement, and drastically lowered the students' affective filter by minimizing learning anxiety. In relation to the results of the study, it is suggested for primary English teachers to transition from rote-memorization drills to context-rich, brief multimedia integration to optimize young learners' long-term lexical retention.
2026-06-24T00:00:00+07:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement##
